Talk Title: The Politics of Safety: The Black Freedom Struggle and the Crisis of Justice Dr. King discusses Black resistance to police violence in New York City during the Great Depression and World War II through the lens of what he calls the “politics of safety.” Then, building on the conceptual framework of his book, The Politics of Safety: The Black Struggle for Police Accountability in La Guardia’s New York, he discusses histories of Black struggles between the late 1960s to the early 1990s and raises questions about the crisis of justice, safety, and policing, as well as ways to understand and teach African American history and Black social movements in the United States.
