Preserved historic buildings, monuments, and grounds

The Birth Home at 501 Auburn Ave NE is where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, and spent the first twelve years of his life. The Victorian-style house has been restored to its 1930s appearance and is accessible by free ranger-led tours (timed-entry tickets required). Tours depart from the visitor center and provide a deeply personal look at King's formative years in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood.

The original Ebenezer Baptist Church sanctuary, where Dr. King, his father Daddy King, and his grandfather A.D. Williams all served as pastors, is now part of the National Historical Park. Dr. King preached his first sermon here at age 17. The sanctuary is open for self-guided visits and serves as the site of commemorative services. The congregation relocated to the new sanctuary across the street in 1999.
