Riverwalk ATL is a hidden gem in the city of Atlanta. It’s a dense urban forest tucked alongside the Chattahoochee in the Upper Westside.
Birding focus:
We'll be looking for migrating Flycatchers, Vireos, Thrushes, Warblers, Tanagers, and Grosbeaks moving through the river corridor. Common raptors are Redtails and Red Shoulders but I’ve spotted Ospreys and Cooper’s, among others. The trail crosses under an I-285 overpass that is a spring nesting site for hundreds of cliff swallows. We may also spot turtles, deer, and even coyotes, if we’re lucky.
The walk is about 2 miles total. It is unpaved dirt (some mud if there’s rain) and mostly flat. Bring water and snacks. Note that no public restrooms are currently available on site, so plan accordingly. All levels are welcome.
Directions and parking:
Riverlands ATL is located on Lower Paul Avenue in Atlanta's Riverside neighborhood. From I-285, take Exit 22 (Bolton Road) and head east on Bolton Road. Turn left on Paul Ave and head all the way down to the concrete plant entrance and turn left (remains Paul Ave). Drive down about 200 meters and the entrance to Riverlands ATL will be on your right . Street parking is available along Paul Avenue. Look for my big white SUV on the grass under the oak tree. Parking is free. The trailhead is right there.
We will start the walk sharply at 8AM. Please arrive a little earlier than our starting time so we can make the most use of the morning chorus.
