Join us for an upcoming ADAMA Arts Salon featuring ADAMA’s founder & Executive Director, Dr. Fahamu Pecou, in conversation with renowned artist Alexis Peskine.Moderator:Dr. Fahamu Pecou, is an interdisciplinary artist and scholar whose works combine observations on hip-hop, fine art, and popular culture. Pecou’s paintings, performance art, and academic work addresses concerns around contemporary representations of Black men and how these images impact both the reading and performance of Black masculinity. Fahamu received his BFA at the Atlanta College of Art in 1997 and a Ph.D. from Emory University in 2018. Dr. Pecou was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2024 by the country of France. He exhibits his art worldwide in addition to lectures and speaking engagements at colleges and universities. As an educator, Dr. Pecou has developed (ad)Vantage Point, a narrative-based arts curriculum focused on Black male youth.Alexis Peskine:Peskine's signature works are large-scale mixed media 'portraits' of the African diaspora, which are rendered by hammering nails of different gauge, with pin-point accuracy, into wood stained with coffee and mud. By applying gold leaf to the nails he creates breathtaking composite images. He depicts figures that portray strength and perseverance, with energy reminiscent of the spiritually chargedMinkisi'power figures' of the Congo Basin. He also produces striking photography and video works.As Villa Albertine 2026 resident, Alexis Peskine will study African spirituality as a force for resistance and transformation. He will explore the connections between trance, collective memory, Afro-American culture, and contemporary expressions of the sacred.TheADAMA Arts Salonis a signature conversation series featuring contemporary artists, curators, scholars, and cultural leaders from across the African Diaspora.
