Cinema's First Nasty Women Wednesday 4/8/2026 at 2:30pm in PAIS 280 Dr. Maggie Hennefeld (University of Minnesota) and Dr. Laura Horak (Carleton University) will give a talk on their groundbreaking research that led to Cinema’s First Nasty Women, a 4-disc DVD and Blu-ray collection released by Kino Classics (with accompanying open access booklet) that features rarely seen silent shorts featuring women engaging in various acts of subversive behavior, from comic antics to defying gender norms. The talk will provide compelling and essential engagement with this important research, showing Emory students, faculty and members of the Atlanta community the rich and substantive ways in which silent films can inform our understanding of women’s issues, past and present. This visit follows a Tuesday 4/7 screening event at the Plaza Theatre where some shorts in the collection will be shown. ---- The event is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by the Hightower Fund and the Department
